Willow Street House
The site is a yard and small turn of the century shingle house in the Village of Southampton. The scheme features three primary sets of elements. Sections of free standing fieldstone and concrete walls define the basic inner court, an elevated patio and wooden arbor establish the primary outdoor "room" and concrete garden elements are used for tree wells, benches, planter basins, steps, cook area and fountains. The project faced the competing criteria of a desire for a simple modernistic garden space and the rigorous demands of the local architectural review board. To satisfy the perception of the project by the community, the walls were clad with fieldstone to the outside. The more austere concrete surfaces were all turned inward, visible only to the private spaces of the yard. The garden features signify the earth, sun and moon.
