MESA'S
EDGE RANCH
Hotchkiss,
CO
The Mesa's Edge Ranch is conceived as a secondary home on the mesas of western Colorado. The site had an existing wood cabin and an old grainery, which were both preserved and incorporated into the design. The structure of the house is a typical barn-like structure, a timber post and beam covered with a corrugated metal roof, set on a concrete slab. The house consists of two main building systems; a timber super structure and independent enclosing partitions. The partitions and roof are made of Structural Insulated Panels that are a common construction technique in the area and have a high R-value. They are covered with stucco that is indigenous to the west. Those two systems interlock and create the programmatic elements of the interior. Glass spans the joint between the two primary volumes offering views of the outside landscape and a continuous flow of light and space.
